New Air BnB in Roseneath!

Today was a big day of purchasing all I need to start my Air BnB business. Having had a lot of experience staying at BnBs all around the world, I now have a very good idea of what works and what doesn't, so I am taking a small gamble and hoping it will work out, after all my house is in a fantastic position and people will love it.  Just need to furnish the main room, soon to be vacated, finally, by its erstwhile occupant who is now happily co-habiting with her new and delightful man, H.

At the Newtown Sallies' this morning I was very active, buying a good mattress and divan base which I will use myself and give my Latex Queen Bed to the welcome couples who will come to use the Deluxe Room overlooking Evans Bay. The more modest, single room, will be the Budget Price, and serve those who just want to stay a night or two cheaply.

Next move is to quickly do the photography, much done already, and get on the Air BnB website. They have been constantly inviting me to share my home for a while now, so they will be happy to have my business. I will need all my net-working ability on Face Book and Linked In to get my business up and running. My aim is modest, just to pay the rent and give me some extra to keep the house in order. They say do what you passionately love, and I am a born hospitable animal, so this will be my joy, not my job!

Cafe Z

Sunday off Tory St, Cafe Z for Zaida, my preferred fix on  Sunday morning. Also just around the corner from my cinema haunt of the moment, The Paramount.

After a big disappointment yesterday I need to try to get back Festival confidence by seeing a good  documentary, another one about gender dysphoria, this one called 'Beyond the Binary'. It's also a good reason not to be home while A does her next-to final-moving - best to leave her space to herself and H.
It's getting closer to her final move time, but her bed is still there. Things have settled and the drama is slowly diffusing as she sees she has made the right decision in moving in with her hopeful life partner, H. Good luck to them!

In the meantime I get on with my life, creating websites and getting housemates...

WOSOSI - WOW!

What a day does in Wellington...

This morning I woke up to a definite NO from the possible new flatmate, she is sorry but wants to stay on in K.  So be it, immediately I reposted the ad. We'll get the right one at the right time. In the meantime I am focussing on getting the room together and also renting out the small one on Air BnB.

But today is Saturday, and is the day of the choir. My favourite choir WOSOSI was having an afternoon of  singing  in Wadestown and I finally got there, just in time, as I went to the wrong church. Luckily I discovered a notice on a local cafe window which said,  'choir afternoon down the road' and I found another church hall where they were, but not their usual rehearsal one which I went to.

It was an amazing practice and I fell in love totally and absolutely with the choir and I will doubtless join them. Now I have a car it is much easier to attend although they are on a bus route.

All is well in the world, and after an early coffee with Tom in Newtown this morning and some market shopping,  I am now about to catch another movie with him and B at The Paramount. But before the movie I am having another first, a burger at the Wisconsin Burger shop, gourmet burgers I am told. It is just up the road from the church so I don't have to go far.
A busy day today,  but a relaxing tomorrow, I hope!
The Burger shop..forgettable, but then I never fancied hamburgers!

The movie was also totally forgettable. I really don't know why I chose it, a waste of time and money, but it was nice to catch up with T and B.
The film, called 'The Geography Club', was a US production of a high school,'gay romance', how it ever got made is beyond me. It was a total indictment of ignorant and silly American culture.

Fidels For Morning Tea

Well the name says it all. It is one of Cuba St's iconic cafes, and always popular with young and old. This morning I have delivered the rack of my scooter to Jamie, having forgotten I had removed, it, and now am having a nice Kawkawa tea in the Garden with jazz and conversation all around. The only negative is the bad service, but nice, and the lingering smell of smokers who have just left, happily.

This is the beginning of the Cuba St Jazz festival with lots on tonight so I wonder where I'll go. I may even catch another doco at the The Paramount!

This morning I received a somewhat positive email from Michelle, who apologised for dithering.I have  arranged she meet Fir tonight and that may well help her decision. I hope so, if not, I have decided very happily to go full-bore with my Air BnB idea and just rent the room out to visitors. Fir is fine with this and I know it will work. My first business leap in NZ. Wish me luck. I am also setting up the website for my 'Easy French for Beginners and Advanced Students'. I feel very energised since I have bought my sports car, I wonder if there is any link,  lol!

Movie with Tiwhanawhana

I am off again to the Out Movie Festival, but first I have an excellent cup of tea at The Laundry on Cuba Street. I am actually waiting for my barber to return. He has quaintly left a handwritten post, Back at 2.45, and that may be at a stretch I would think. But he is a good barber so I will wait, I hope it is Danny who is my regular  barber however.
Neighbours in The Laundry
Eclectic mix, very Cuba Street.

I am in a stasis at present - car being looked at, new housemate still deciding to come or not, old housemate being very weird moving things out of house which I know are not hers to move, but what can I say. She probably feels the need to take some of things she identified with into her new home, a sign, I suppose, of how much she liked living here.

Tonight I am seeing two queer movies, but one is with my friends from Tiwhanawhana, as it is a movie about transgendered people in Hawaii so there will be a lot of identification. I am really looking forward to socialising with this group who have become my friends. Later a second movie which is more mainstream gay, but looks good.

Later that night...

I finally found Danny the barber, but at a new hairdresser's not too far away just off Cuba. A really nice set-up called Grandfathers Barbershop, owned by a Brazilian called Rodriguez, they are quite a duo. After a nice very short hair-cut I am back to see Ron at BP and we agree to meet at six at The  Paramount. The cinema is nearly full, the Producer and Director are both there and the documentary is more than good, it is fantastic.

Entitled 'Kumu Hina', it is the story of a transgender Native Hawaiian who by the end of the movie is standing for Federal US election! A great love story as well, as she falls in love with a traditional ( see problems!) Tongan man, marries him in Fiji and takes him back to Hawaii where she is a kids' teacher of traditional native Hawaiian cultural singing and dance, especially with kids who show signs of being 'in the middle', as she says, which is her case. With a booming male voice and strong personality she is a woman inside and she likes it that way.

A second story within the movie is about the confidence she inspires in a young 'mahu' transgender girl to lead the troupe of older all male hula dancers in the school concert at the end of year. This is a must-see movie for most people, but especially for those with gender differences or dysphoria.
Six stars!

The next was an Argentinian movie which was bland and boring in comparison, although touted to be one of the best in the fest. Not! Strangely call 'Hawaii', it is about two young men of different social classes, who spend one and a half hours on the screen avoiding making love, then at the very end, kiss. That's about it, and it didn't recommend me to Gay Argentina one bit. It was a big wank, without any action...one star! So much for 'gay' movies.

However I saw all my Tiwhanwhana friends there and had a good talk with one of them who also owns a sports car, as well as a smart sedan! These girls are very special indeed.

New Flatmate

Well what a difference a day makes! The Aussie applicant decides to stay put (but only after my emailing him to see if all was OK!) A good escape that one, so I have subsequently asked Michelle to come and am awaiting her response, a positive one I am hoping for.
Michelle on terrace...
She looks like the right one ay?

Chai latte in Starbucks...

The day has dawned well and the auguries are positive. The AA man came after 8am to inflate my tyre, which for some weird reason had gone flat, then into the mechanic Bho to give me a definitive inspection of beautiful Bella. So I am now waiting for his call to pick her up and see what, if anything, is wrong. So I popped into BP and R told me of the front page of the Dominion Post, see pic, a great piece of publicity about  Muslim countries who discriminate against gays.
Abraham from the Maldives, whose drag name is Medulla Oblongata, won the first prize in Wellington as Miss Capital Drag last night at Ivy's Drag bar in Cuba Street. He is an activist and looks beautiful as a woman, non? More power to drag queens I say!

Just picked the (rather expected bad) news from Bho. A bit of work to do, including a well overdue service so I leave Bella with him for her 'grooming'. In two days I expect a bill of around $700 and a car in great condition. Which means that I must recoup the paltry $700 that J is offering me for my poor scooter.  Let's hope he doesn't reduce that any more, he's a right businessman. So back home now to practise my poi for tonight's Tiwhanawhana.

Californian Lunch

Today is the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend in NZ and everything is closed, so happily I have invited my two, very non-royalist friends, Californian Elanita and Lucas, for lunch. I poached some lemon fish bought fresh yesterday, and I included some steamed broccoli, sprouts (brussel) and also baked some  waxy potatoes and juicy pumpkin to go with it. This with a nice leek and mushroom sauce, made a lovely meal and they were both suitably impressed. I think I was too as it turned out much better than I had thought. I also baked an Italian recipe of gluten free apple pie, served with yoghurt, which was a resounding success. They are soon to return to the US having tried the tough life here and decided the US is sweeter. Lucas is a psychiatrist and would have found it very hard dealing with the system here in NZ. I empathise with their decision. Elanita is a talented health worker/acupuncturist and did great things on my back, so essentially it was a thank-you lunch.

She also told me how to set up a website, which is next on my list of things to do. I now await an email with more details. It is time to teach French and when the new housemate comes it will really be time.
Btw, Michelle a lawyer from Malaysia, is a certain possiblity as she would fit in perfectly. She came by yesterday for a look and said Yes!, but I await the Aussie who comes to look tomorrow.

Btw, I forgot the Queer Film Festival...here are some reviews.

The first movie, about the internet nerd in NYC and his GoGo dancer boyfriend, was intriguing as it seemed to be nearly a documentary, made by him on his i-phone. It was well done, and actually believeable, and a bit scary for an oldie like me, who keeps well away from internet dating. But it was another audience favourite and I did enjoy it from a few points of view.

The Californian Couple....
after a lovely lunch.

Born This Way.....
This was a great documentary about Cameroon and was the second film I saw. It was a moving account of the sexual discrimination existing in many African countries. The film covered a lesbian couple who were hunted out of their village for being just that, and a young man who also had to move house for fear of being bashed, and possibly murdered, for his sexual orientation.

A good human rights lawyer, a woman, had taken up their cause and hopes to get it to the Supreme Court where a change in law might happen and make an enormous difference to many countries in Africa. I felt so much sympathy and sadness for their plight I felt like I needed to go there to support them. But the change must come from within.

I then saw a charming 'coming of age' movie from Brazil, about a blind teenaged boy learning about his sexuality and actually falling in love with a classmate in the face of much mockery from the other straight schoolmates. It was a delightful, happy, life-affirming move, with the parents also coming to believe in their son's ability to survive by himself in this world. It was another crowd favourite.

The opening Gala for the Lesbians I also decided to attend, just because it was there. Yes, I was the only male in a very large female audience. A rather raucus reception was received to this comedy about a 'butch dyke', (their words), and a femme lesbian who wasn't sure of her preferences. Called 'Heterosexual Jill', it was a fun sort of movie, however the lesbians sitting next to me disliked it intensely in spite of the hilarity from the main crowd. They were thinking, I believe, that it was stereotypical, and real life was not ever like that. For me it was a romp and a good laugh, made by usually non-funny Americans who must have had a lot of fun making it. But such is lesbian life, they seem to guard their space very carefully, some of them anyway.

There are a few more films to go, so I'll keep you posted. I have a busy week ahead of me, in this very film-crazy city.
